How to upgrade firmware:

Upgrading the Nikon SB-900 Firmware might seem complicated or confusing at first, especially if your not a computer buff, which you probably are in a little way familiar with a computer using the Nikon SB900 Speedlight anyhow. To help outline the process of upgrading the SB 900 firmware, I have put together the below text, as well as a helpful illustration for those that jsut want to check out some pictures with helpful diagrams:

Firmware Upgrading Requirements:

To upgrade your firmware with the SB-900 you will need the following bodies:

  • Nikon D90
  • Nikon D700
  • Nikon D300 with at least firmware v1.10
  • Nikon D3 with at least firmware v2.0
  • This list will expand shortly as the sb-900 reaches a more mature age..

Also required:

  • Charged batteries on both camera & SB-900
  • Memory Card or USB cable & usb port / card reader
  • Compatible Windows or MAC operating system on computer
  • Computer has 5+ MB free
  • Computer has 32mb ram
  • Note – 99% of people with a computer bought within the last 10 years will meet those last requirements
  • Download the firmware file to your computer
  • Format memory card in the compatible camera
  • Connect the compatible camera to your computer via MSC mass storage USB mode or use if a memory card reader
  • Open the downloaded file to see a new folder created
  • Copy the .bin file inside onto the top level of the memory card
  • Disconnect camera from computer or insert the memory card into the camera
  • Attach Speedlight SB-900 and turn both units on
  • Pressing the menu button – select setup menu and then select Firmware Version
  • Select update and follow the on screen ques, Do not turn either off during the update
  • Message will display that update is complete and you can turn off camera, re-format memory card and turn back on speedlight to confirm new firmware version

I use a D80 with SB900 speedlight. By updating the software for SB900 would it be compatable for my D80 camera.

    Thanks

    Dear Sir
Thank you for the above. I am pretty disappointed that updates are not allowed for D80. As far to my knowledge the D80 is relatively new model. I am very happy with my SB900. I think you should allow Nikon D80 purchasers upgrade options.
