I bought myself a SB-900 to replace my SB-800 as my master flash. I find it has a much better menu system with the dial to change modes. The flash lives up to it’s Speedlight name. The recycle time is incredibly low which makes it easier to overheat but Nikon has added a new safety mode to prevent this. It is a little annoying if you actually get it to go into thermal shutdown but it really isn’t easy. I don’t find it any worse than my SB-800. When working in the studio it is nice still having my 800 as a remote along with the two 600′s I was already using as remotes with the 800. There is lots of experimentation to do with this flash. It has some awesome light pattern settings when using as your only flash. I’d call the menu system… Extensive. It does take some time to learn but once you have it mastered there is lots you can do, I like how it works with my D3 and can update my firmware. If you really get into it you can program your own menus in. It seems like a lot of hassle but in the long run having your menus how you want can save lots of time and button pressing. I am absolutely loving Nikon’s speedlight SB900 Flash and would recommended it to all amateurs, professionals and enthiusiasts alike!

“I held off on purchasing an SB-900 for the longest time, having read a number of negative reviews on overheating and size. I finally bit the bullet and can say I should have jumped sooner. Nikon have another winner with unbelievable performance, and importantly, handling. The flash is easy to use, with dedicated switching for master/slave configuration, and the inclusion of a diffuser and gels is a bonus. I haven’t experienced any of the overheating issues mentioned by others, and the flash is still a brute in terms of size, which is why I rated it a 4. But you can’t go wrong if you want a fully-featured top-of-the-line speedlight.”

I recently purchased a SB900 to cover a family wedding. I used Energizer 2500mAh batteries. I spaced my shots, (Not in rapid succession.) After about six to eight shots the SB900 would overheat and shut down. This continued throughout the night for the first three sets of batteries. Upon inserting the forth set of batteries the unit functioned like a dream. I am at a loss as to if it is a problem with the batteries or the flash, as I only purchased the SB900 the day before the wedding and haven’t had the time to test it since.
